2010 Polar Bear Plunge

At noon on Friday, January 1, 2010 I will be at Loyola Beach near Pratt Park participating in the annual polar bear plunge. If you are curious and want to know why I do this— read my post here.

Depending on how many people come to cheer me on will determine if I go to an after-party for "hot" drinks— hot-chocolate, hot-apple cider, hot-toddies, etc.

Hope to see you there.

Brr, Brr, Brr. I have never wanted to try that. Though I admire those who do. Have fun!

Oh my goodness. I don't think I'd ever be inspired to try this. Just read your other post on the topic. Thin layers of ice. Ack. It gets in to the 50s down here, and I'm donning my fleece. Sounds exciting though...and bleeping cold. Enjoy your dip and the subsequent warming parties. You're becoming a pro!

I've never had the nerve to do this. First, because it's so damn cold and second, because there is no way I'm putting on a swimsuit in public. Especially in the winter. But I've always admired those who do it. Brave people!!

Have fun!

So you're one of those crazy, ahem, I mean BRAVE people we see on the 5:00 news here in Chicago!

No, just no. I rolled around naked in the snow once, but I had a sauna to jump back into and I'd been drinking liberally before hand.

I can't believe anyone likes winter enough to do the polar bear plunge! Good luck with that, and stay warm!

Used to live in Naperville when I was at Argonne National Lab and journeyed downtown to watch the dip every year. Including the year when it hit -33 and the wind chill dropped below -50. Hopefully you are through shivering by now.

Oh ... this brings back mem'ries for sure! We used to Water Ski at Canyon Lake (near Elsinore) to earn Polar Bear patches on January 1st every year for decades. I don't do it any longer however.
Hugs and blessings,
